Old skool

I dislike shaving, for months I've been trying to find a new solution to the daily face ache.  I used to use a multi blade cartridge one, I've tried em all, sensor excel, mach 3, fusion, sword protector etc. I've even tried an electric one and I hate them all.

They're all as bad as each other the adverts promise a baby smooth finish and a shave as comfortable as oral sex, they all deliver a dry face with a sand paper rough finish and about as much comfort as getting punched in the face.

My issues are little nic cuts, yanked hairs, dried skin & the price of consumables - blades foam/gel/oil etc.

I stumbled upon a website extolling the virtues of the "traditional" safety razor & I've been looking into them for a while. With something touchable like a razor I wanted to get a feel of it before choosing one so got one from a shop in Manchester.

I chose a merkur with a long handle. It's pretty weighty in hand and feels lovely. I got some soft sandlewood shaving soap and a badger hair brush to slather it on with. I've only had one shave so far and it was lots better. Rather than yanking hairs the single blade cuts smoothly through. It's different to "normal" shaving, takes slightly longer & good technique demands you shave in a structured way.

I'm sure this won't be the last time I write about it,  but so far so good :-)
